Tuchel Seeks Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Star Leaves Egotism at the Door.
One snub did the trick. Another and it could have seemed vindictive from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to realize that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require help from the talented midfielder, although it is also up to the player to fit into the game plans and team pecking order required with England now that he is returned to the manager's supportive environment.
The manager wants his aggressive mentality, his fire, but it is about channeling it appropriately. Personal talent matters but England know from bitter experience that there is a price to pay when fame dominates. Still, a statement has been delivered.
The midfielder was given food for thought after not being selected of the previous squad. He observed the national side secure their spot at the tournament without him. He watched Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a counterpressing No 10. He listened as the coach talk about valuing the team's dynamism and ethics. Naturally, Bellingham has reacted in winning fashion, scoring crucial goals for his club against Barcelona and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have put his tournament chances precarious.
The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham focused on pressuring the opposition instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to picking a fight with one of the best players in the world. The best outcome is that his period on the sidelines has demonstrated that representing the national team is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the youngster after showing that he is willing to drop big names.
“There is no problem with him, there is no problem about his personality,” the German stated. “Jude possesses a competitive streak. It takes a certain edge to reach the heights that he has. Everyone must support him and build a setting where he can channel that intensity against rivals and towards the goals we are building as a team.”
The star took up the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming final group games versus one opponent and the other. Any other news? Indeed, what about Phil Foden? Here is another prodigious playmaker who needs love and guidance. Foden has not played for England since March and has struggled to hit the heights recently but Tuchel could not ignore the 25-year-old after his display in his club's victory against Borussia Dortmund this week.
The issue, however, is how to use the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to select another youngster once he recovers from a persistent groin problem. Would taking multiple creators to the World Cup be excessive? Gareth Southgate never found the optimal mix at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, cramping the captain's style in the process.
It is hard to see the current manager making the same mistake if it disrupts the attacking balance. Space exists for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clear roles helps. He is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who must play through the middle. Tuchel wants him close to the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “Phil is to feature in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I have this fantasy regarding him for a long time. In my view it matches his abilities best.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's the position, the setup, it's unclear.
“I think he is also accustomed to playing for his club in a specific system, to have a clear task. Believe he benefits greatly from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
The manager talked about Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and Foden scoring strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is recognized for his excellent performances for Manchester City at defense. Interest abounds.
The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested using Foden as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are other options should he be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.
At the same time, it is additionally a moment to develop Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It's surprising that you have to go back to the latter assisting the captain to net in an international match against Scotland in over a year ago to find the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the duo combined for a goal. Tuchel will know that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.
“At this point eventually it becomes the responsibility of the players,” he stated. He does not shy away to be blunt. There is still a feeling of the player under scrutiny. He may not be guaranteed to start against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires Bellingham onside but he will be watching him carefully. Leave the ego outside. It will make a powerful England team into an even better one.
