Larry Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
The economist announced he would retreat from public positions after Congressional panel made public his frequent communications with Epstein

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is departing from the board at OpenAI, just several days after a collection of emails between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

He commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have served, optimistic about the prospects of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their advancement".

The prominent academic, who once led the Ivy League institution, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.

Digital Correspondence

The newly public communications revealed that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 apprehension for accused sex trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the technology organization said it accepted his choice to depart.

"We value his many contributions and the insight he provided to the Board," the company commented.

Congressional Action

This development follows after both chambers of Congress decided on recently to endorse a measure that would require the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on the case.

The measure will subsequently move to the office of the White House for endorsement. The President has said he intends to endorse the legislation, after changing his view on the subject following pressure from his supporters.

Email Contents

A collection of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee recently included several high-profile figures in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any criminal activity by those people.

The emails revealed that the economist and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to connect Summers to prominent international personalities.

Personal Accountability

After the emails were shared with the public, the former official expressed he assumed "total ownership for my misguided decision to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to rebuild faith and repair connections with the people nearest to me".

Previous Positions

The professor occupied senior posts under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under President Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He presided over Harvard from five years and is still a academic there. When declaring his step-down from public roles recently on Monday, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following his statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning think tank in the capital where the professor was a prominent member, announced that he was not connected with the organization.

He joined the directorate of the technology firm, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO OpenAI's head.
